The blows keep coming for the Memphis Grizzlies as the club announced that guard Marcus Smart will miss at least the next six weeks with a finger injury suffered in Tuesday’s win over Dallas.
The 29 year old suffered a rupture of the proximal interphalangeal joint central on his right ring finger in the 3rd quarter, as the digit looked awkwardly out of place after making a 3 pointer. “It just felt funny and looked funny,” Smart said after the game. “So I’m just like, let’s get this checked out. Better safe than sorry. Nothing’s broken, but we’ll see what they say.”
The former Defensive Player of the Year is currently averaging 14.5pts/4.3ast/2.7reb per contest in his first season with the Grizzlies after being traded by the Celtics. Smart had previously missed 17 games this year with a left foot injury, meaning he’s only been able to appear in 20 contests thus far for his new club.
Memphis, who is currently 14-23 on the year, and sitting outside the play-in-tournament picture, was already without the services of centre Steven Adams due to a knee injury, and star PG Ja Morant who will miss the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury. Now, they’ll need to lean even more heavily on 4th year guard Desmond Bane, and Luke Kennard in the interim as they continue to navigate their ever increasing injury list.
The Grizzlies are next in action at home against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday at 8pm ET.
