According to reports, Italian giants Inter Milan are doing their due diligence on a potential January transfer for Canadian midfielder Tajon Buchanan.
Buchanan, who currently plays for Belgian side Club Brugge, has seen his stock rise considerably in recent years after starting in the Champions League knockout stages, and starring internationally for Canada. Despite Inter Milan fielding a league leading roster in the Italian Serie A, insiders believe that the 24 year old could potentially start immediately for the club if a transfer ultimately takes place.
With reports that a deal in the neighbourhood of $10M is currently being negotiated, a move to Italy would cap off a rapid rise through the soccer ranks for the Brampton born player. Originally drafted 9th overall to MLS side New England in 2019, Buchanan could be the next Canadian born player to star in a topflight European league following in the footsteps of Alphonso Davies.
Inter has long been monitoring Buchanan’s status, and were one of several clubs to inquire about his availability following the World Cup. However the club ultimately opted to stay in house, and began the 2023 campaign without a deal in place.
Fast forward to January 2024, and suddenly Inter find themselves without right winger Juan Cuadrado for the remainder of the year after the 35 year old suffered an achilles injury. That roster opening, coupled with the fact that Juventus are breathing down Inter’s neck atop the standings, and suddenly talks have resumed with an increased fervour.
The Italian transfer window officially opens on Tuesday, allowing Buchanan to be eligible to join the club for the 2nd half of the season. Inter Milan is next in action on Saturday vs. Verona in a 6:30am ET showdown.
