The New York Rangers have announced that injured forward Filip Chytil will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a setback in his recovery last week.
Chytil, who was been out since November 2nd due to an upper body injury, had 6 assists across 10 games with the Rangers in 2023-24 before going down in his team’s 2-1 win over Carolina.
“Following a thorough evaluation of Filip Chytil after his recent setback from an upper body injury, it has been confirmed he will be out for the reminder of this season,” a statement from the club read. “The organization’s top priority throughout this process has been Filip’s health and we will continue to fully support him in his recovery with an aim to return for the 2024-25 season.”
Following a career high 45 points (23G, 23A) in 2023-24, hopes were high for the 24 year old entering the season. The club rewarded him with a 4 year, $17.75M contract extension, locking him up through the 2026-27 campaign as a result. Now however, he’ll be placed on LTIR with the goal of providing the club some additional financial flexibility ahead of the March 8th NHL trade deadline.
Originally taken 21st overall by the Rangers in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, Chytil struggled to adapt to the fast pace of the NHL in his first few years in the Big Apple. However last season’s strong finish, and some early chemistry with fellow “Kid Line” members Alexis Lafreniere, and Kaapo Kakko had many bullish on him becoming a late bloomer inside the Rangers organization.
Following a 7-2 trouncing of the Ottawa Senators, New York is now off until February 5th for the NHL All-Star break. When they return, they’ll host the Avalanche and Lightning at Madison Square Garden before heading out for a date with the Chicago Blackhawks.
