Iowa sharpshooter Caitlin Clark has set a new record for most expensive women’s basketball trading card sale after her 2022 Bowman University Superfractor rookie sold for $78,000 at auction this week.
The sale shatters Diana Taurasi’s 2004 Ultra Platinum Medallion card which went for $11,500 earlier this year. Sabrina Ionescu, whose 2020 Prizm WNBA black gold rookie went for $10,800 is the only other female player whose basketball card has fetched 5 figures at auction.
The presumptive #1 pick in the upcoming WNBA draft, Clark is currently on pace to set several NCAA career records including the most points scored during a collegiate career. The 1 of 1 autographed Superfractor was graded a PSA 10, and becomes the 2nd most expensive women’s sports card of all time.
Her $78,000 figure trails only Serena Williams on the secondary market, as the tennis legend has 3 rookie cards that have all eclipsed Clark’s new high water mark for basketball.
“The 2022 Bowman University Superfractor Caitlin Clark Rookie Auto offers collectors a chance to own a 1/1 issue of arguably the most exciting player in women’s college basketball,” the card’s item description reads. “Topps did not pull any punches on the flip side, rattling off a list of surreal accomplishments in Clark’s Iowa career. With three USA Women’s Basketball team gold medals already hanging from her shelf, this Bowman U card reminds fans the fearless point guard is on her way to stacking Michael Jordan-like hardware. This all-chromium “1st Bowman” release has the added benefit of NCAA licensing, which the prior year’s set did not boast.”
The sale was brokered by PWCC’s January Premier Auction, with the winning bidder currently remaining anonymous.
