Caitlin Clsrk is officially the Hawkeyes all-time leading scorer after dropping a 24pts/11ast/10reb triple double in her team’s 94-53 win over Northern Iowa on Sunday.
Clark, the reigning national Player of the Year, has now amassed 2,813 career points, passing Iowa alum Megan Gustafson, who scored 2,804 points between 2015 and 2019. Luka Garza is the school’s leading scorer on the men’s side with 2,306 career points.
“Caitlin Clark is the best player in the country,” Northern Iowa coach Tanya Warren said following the loss. “No ifs, ands or buts about it. You’re not going to stop her, you’re not going to contain her. You just want to make things tough for her.”
Making the feat all the more impressive is the fact that the 21 year old will have the remainder of the season to add to her historic total. Not only that, but she also technically has a 5th year of eligibility as well which the NCAA granted athletes because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As soon as I saw her play as a freshman, I thought, ‘Yeah, this record isn’t going to last long at all,'” former record holder Megan Gustafson said in March.
Clark is currently 723 points shy of former Washington guard Kelsey Plum’s career mark for Division 1 basketball set between 2013 and 2017.
Iowa (3-0) entered the week ranked number 3 in the country. However, following losses by both LSU and UConn, the Hawkeyes could see themselves atop the AP rankings when they’re next released.
The Hawkeyes are next in action on Thursday at 8:30pm ET vs. Kansas State.
