The Minnesota Vikings have acquired QB Joshua Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a 6th round draft pick.
Also headed to Minnesota is a 7th round pick, which could become a 6th rounder depending on how many snaps Dobbs takes in Minnesota over the remainder of the season.
Dobbs, 28, has thrown for 1,569 yards and 8 TDs against only 5 INTs thus far with Arizona. With starter Kyler Murray continuing to recover from a torn ACL suffered in 2022, the former 5th round pick from 2017 has filled in admirably for a Cardinals team that has struggled through the first half of the season.
With Kirk Cousins being lost for the year due to a torn Achilles tendon this past weekend, Minnesota had some decisions to make regarding the future of the team. After a slow start, the Vikings have clawed their way back into the NFC playoff picture and currently sit at 4-4 heading into Week 9.
Rookie QB Jaren Hall replaced Cousins on Sunday, but was unlikely to figure into the team’s short term plans as they vie for a wildcard spot down the stretch.
While speculation immediately began that Murray could be returning to action this weekend, sources indicate that rookie Clayton Tune is likely to start vs. the Browns on Sunday. The former 1st overall draft pick is however nearing a return to on field action, and was removed from the team’s injury report last week.
However, with the Cardinals well out of the playoff picture at 1-7, there’s no need to rush Murray back. Instead, it’s far more likely that he makes his 2023 season debut in Week 10 at home vs. the Atlanta Falcons.
