The Boston Bruins have signed forward Trent Frederic to a 2 year / $4.6M contract extension the club announced Tuesday.
Frederic was a restricted free agent who was scheduled to have his arbitration hearing this week. The RFA’s camp submitted a valuation of $2.9M, while Boston countered on Sunday with a $1.4M figure. However with the new deal in place, that meeting will be avoided, with the 25 year old now tied to Boston through the 2024-25 season.
The 6’3” centre posted a career year in 2022-23, recording 31 points (17G, 14A) across 79 contests. Originally selected 29th overall by the Bruins in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Frederic has spent his entire 198 game NHL career in Beantown.
Averaging 11:55 in ice time a night last year, the St. Louis native will be expected to log additional minutes this fall following the retirement of Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron. Long time Boston centre David Krejci is also expected to retire this offseason as well, leaving a massive void up the middle for the reigning President’s Trophy winners.
Frederic played primarily on the 3rd forward group on a line centered by Charlie Coyle. However, Coyle is expected to be elevated into a top 6 role, leaving room for the former USNTDP standout to move back to his natural position at centre.
With an AAV of $2.3M per season, Frederic’s new deal will take him into unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2025. While the former Wisconsin Badger was on the ice last year, Boston outscored their opponents 47-23 and generated 53.48% of the scoring chances at 5-on-5.
