Stephen Curry’s list of athletic achievements continues to grow by the day. Not only is he a 4x NBA champion, 2x league MVP, 9x All-Star, and the league’s all time 3-point leader, but he can now add “golf champion” to his resume as well.
Curry captured the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Nevada on Sunday, accumulating 75pts to win the celebrity golf tournament. The 35 year old narrowly edged out retired tennis player Mardy Fish (73pts) and NHL forward Joe Pavelski (66).
Needing an Eagle on 18 to secure the championship, the Warriors star didn’t disappoint:
The Golden State guard felt confident heading into the weekend, and had his eyes set on the trophy from the onset.
“Honestly, I feel like the way I’m approaching and where I feel my game is I have the game to win it now,” Curry told reporters Friday. “It’s just a matter of, can you do it? I can say it all I want to. I finished fourth twice, I think. So, it’s in there. It’s a matter [of] can I put it together for 54 holes and balance the fun and the focus that you need to have to play all three rounds and play great.”
“So, my goal has always been to try to do it as an active NBA athlete. I got a few more years left to do it. We’ll see how it goes.”
Boasting a 1.3 handicap, Curry dazzled crowds all weekend long, as his exploits on the course made the rounds on social media. His most viral clip was his hole in one on the 7th hole Saturday, becoming the first competitor to ace the hole in tournament history.
Curry is only the third active professional athlete to capture the title in the tournament’s history. He joins Mario Lemieux (1998) and former NFL kicker Al Del Greco (2000) as the only athletes to accomplish the feat.
Warriors fans have to hope that this won’t be the only trophy Curry & Co. will be hoisting in the near future.
