The Montreal Canadiens have signed pending RFA Alex Newhook to a 4yr/$11.6M contract extension the club announced Tuesday.
Under the new deal, Newhook will carry an AAV of $2.9M and will be under team control through 2026-27.
Montreal acquired the 22 year old forward from Colorado on June 27th in exchange for defenseman Gianni Fairbrother and two draft picks (31st & 37th overall in 2023). Newhook is a former first round selection of the Avalanche (16th overall) from the 2019 NHL entry draft.
Over his 159 game career, the St. John’s native has registered 66pts (27G, 39A) and was a member of Colorado’s Stanley Cup winning roster two years prior. Newhook currently figures to play alongside Jake Evans and Brendan Gallagher in Montreal, as the Habs continue their rebuild in 2023-24.
The club still has some work to do on the salary cap front, as they now sit approximately $3.5M over the $83.5M cap for the upcoming season. With some LTIR and retained salary contracts to play with, GM Kent Hughes has some financial maneuvering to complete between now and opening night.
