Las Vegas Aces guard Riquna Williams has been barred from the team following her arrest for felony domestic violence charges this week.
Williams is currently facing 5 felony charges, along with 4 misdemeanour domestic battery charges for alleged incidents with her spouse. A judge released the 33 year old from jail without bail on the condition that she have no contact with her spouse and comply with an alcohol monitoring program prior to her next court appearance on August 2nd.
In a prepared statement, the Aces told fans and the press that “The Las Vegas Aces were made aware of domestic violence charges against a member of our team, Riquna Williams,” the team said Wednesday. “As an organization, we condemn domestic violence of any kind. At this time, Riquna Williams will be precluded from participating in team activities. Our thoughts are with the parties involved in this situation. We are currently gathering more information, and as such we will not have any further comments at this time.”
“We are aware of the alleged incident and are in the process of gathering more information,” the WNBA added in a statement of their own yesterday.
Unfortunately this isn’t the first brush with the law for Williams. The former Miami Hurricane was previously suspended by the WNBA for 10 games in 2019 after a domestic violence incident involving an ex-girlfriend.
Across 253 career WNBA games, Williams has averaged 10.5pts/2.2reb/1.5ast per game while shooting 36.7% from three. Both the Aces and the WNBA have declined to comment on her future in the league following her latest arrest, though it’s fair to say that even if she’s exonerated, her WNBA future now appears murky at best.
