A lucrative couple of months for WWE trading cards continued with the sale of a 2022 John Cena Panini Black Prizm at PWCC recently.
The BGS graded 9.5 Gem Mint copy of the card sold for $17,100, eclipsing the previous record for a John Cena trading card. The 1 of 1 card is from Panini’s debut WWE trading card set and depicts the Doctor of Thuganomics himself about to lay an Attitude Adjustment on Shinsuke Nakamura.
“John Cena’s Black Prizm parallel is one of the more coveted WWE cards in existence,” said Jesse Craig, VP of Sales at PWCC. “This card, along with The Rock’s issue, heralded the arrival of WWE into mainstream card collecting.”
While the Black Prizm card may have broken the previous high water mark for a John Cena card, it fell well short of touching the record setting sum shelled out for a Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson card from the same set.
Johnson’s 1 of 1 Black Prizm sold a few weeks prior for an eye popping sum of $126,000, making it the most expensive sum ever paid for a WWE trading card. The sale of The Rock’s card was also brokered by PWCC, meaning that as it currently stands, collectors seem to be gravitating more towards the most electrifying man in sports entertainment than they are towards Cena.
While the market may eventually correct the nearly 8 fold difference between the values of the two highly sought after cards, for now The Rock reigns supreme in the world of WWE collectibles.
