The New Jersey Devils have acquired forward Tyler Toffoli from the Calgary Flames, the team announced Tuesday evening. Heading back to Calgary is forward Yegor Sharangovich and a 2023 3rd round pick.
The talented winger informed Flames management earlier this month that he didn’t plan on extending with the club beyond the upcoming 2023-24 season. This fall would have been the final year of the 31 year old’s 4yr/$17M contract before he became a free agent.
Toffoli set a career high in goals (34), assists (39), and points (73) last season with the Flames, while also ranking 2nd in powerplay tallies on the team with 10. The Scarborough, ON native brings championship experience to the Devils roster, having won the Cup as a member of the Los Angeles Kings back in 2014, and appearing in the Finals with Montreal in 2021.
A former 2nd round (47th overall) pick by the Kings, Toffoli has recorded 466pts (227G, 239A) across 733 NHL games in his career.
Sharangovich, 25, was the Devils 5th round selection back in 2018, and has appeared in 205 games for the club, registering 106pts (53G, 53A). A pending RFA, the Minsk, Belarus native is arbitration eligible this offseason.
Calgary also acquires a 3rd round pick in this week’s NHL Draft, which New Jersey acquired in the Damon Severson trade to Columbus. The deal sees the Flames reacquire their own selection, which was acquired by the Blue Jackets via Seattle, and will be 80th overall.
