Arguably the most heavily recruited HS basketball player in recent history, Bronny James announced his commitment to USC this week.
The 6’3” G from Sierra Canyon HS announced he had chosen the Trojans over Oregon and Ohio State who were also amongst James’ final 3 schools.
“Congratulations to my son on his next journey, on picking a great university,” Bronny’s father LeBron James said. “I’m proud of him…This is an incredible thing. Obviously, his dad didn’t go to school. His mom didn’t go to college. It’s super cool. … USC is getting a great kid. He’s there to play basketball, they’re going to be super surprised at how great a kid he is, even though they’ve been recruiting him for a while.”
LeBron has long said that it was a goal of his to play alongside his son at the NBA level. If Bronny were to declare for the draft following his freshman season, he could theoretically suit up in 2024-25, which would be his father’s age 40 season.
In all likelihood, Bronny will be an off ball player at USC as the Trojans boast a preseason top 25 program and one of the strongest back courts in the country. Leading scorer Boogie Ellis, and number 1 ranked PG Isaiah Collier are expected to form a dynamic guard combination for the school.
That however shouldn’t be a detriment to James’ development as he is already being lauded as one of the best perimeter defenders and spot up shooters for his age group.
USC has put together 4 consecutive 20+ win seasons, and have made the Elite Eight as recently as 2021. As a result, head coach Andy Enfield was given a contract extension last year which will tie him to the school through 2027-28.
While the 53 year old has had some high profile recruits during his tenure, James is unequivocally the biggest commitment of his career.
With Bronny set to attend USC, he’ll be playing his home games just 2.5 miles up the road from his father. Something that’s sure to keep the entire James family happy in the upcoming season.
