The Rock Smashes WWE Card Sales Record

The most electrifying man in sports entertainment can add another accolade to his ever growing list of accomplishments. On Thursday night a 2022 Panini WWE 1/1 Prizm Black sold for a record setting $126,000.

The figure is the highest sum ever paid for a WWE card.

Graded a NM 7 by PSA, the 1 of 1 card depicts Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson delivering a rock bottom to “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. The two wrestling icons had a legendary feud throughout the 2000’s culminating in a trio of matches at Wrestlemania.

The Rock’s popularity has arguably never been higher as he continues to appear in A-List movie roles, has successfully relaunched the XFL, has a best selling energy drink, and has amassed a massive social media following which stretches well beyond just wrestling fans.

“This is arguably the best WWE trading card in existence,” said Jesse Craig, Vice President of Sales at PWCC. “Cards like this rarely surface for public sale since they are so scarce. And when scarcity outweighs public demand, you see record prices.”

The 2022 series marks the first foray into wrestling by card manufacturer Panini who obtained exclusive rights to the WWE from rival card producer Topps. Topps had maintained WWE trading card rights for the previous 17 years.

Known for their numbered parallels which span across a multitude of sports, the Prizm series has become a staple of the hobby, and wrestling fans evidently are thrilled to be able to see their favourite stars get the Prizm parallel treatment as well.

The previous record is believed to be held by Hulk Hogan’s 1982 card which sold for a then record $51,600 at auction.
