New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton has been placed on the 10 day IL with a left hamstring strain.
Stanton was removed from the game in New York’s 6-1 win over Minnesota after legging out a two run double in the 7th inning. While the 33 year old will undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury, the team didn’t hesitate to put him on the injured list.
“Let’s see what the MRI says,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “He’s moving around OK after the game, but he definitely felt like, before even getting the MRI, that it was an IL stint.”
Currently hitting .269 with 4HRs and 11 RBIs, Stanton makes yet another trip to the IL. A theme that’s become all too familiar during his time in the Bronx. Since breaking into the majors in 2010, the 6’6” righty has had extended trips to the IL in all but four of his MLB seasons. With his latest designation, Stanton has now hit the IL in 5 straight years.
A 5x All-Star and former National League MVP with the Marlins, Stanton is a prodigious hitter and genuine threat to go yard every time he steps into the batter’s box. His availability however is something that has been questioned since donning pinstripes by the New York media.
When the towering outfielder missed a month in 2022 due to tendinitis in his Achilles, the Yankees scuffled to an 11-17 mark. Generally hitting out of the 4 spot in the batting order, Stanton provides protection for reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge, and creates a nightmare for pitchers who have to run through Judge, Anthony Rizzo, and Stanton in the heart of the Yankees lineup.
In a corresponding move, the Yankees recalled 22 year old shortstop Oswald Peraza from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
