New York Yankees top prospect Anthony Volpe will break camp with the big league club following a scintillating spring training performance. The 21 year old shortstop will travel back to the Bronx this week and is expected to join the starting lineup vs. the San Francisco Giants on March 30th.
Volpe was in a heated competition with Oswald Peraza for the opening at short, but forced manager Aaron Boone’s hand by hitting .314/.417/.647 across 17 Spring Training appearances. The uber talented infielder also added 3HRs and 10 extra base hits for good measure.
A consensus top 5 prospect across most major scouting platforms, Volpe will now become the youngest Yankees shortstop to make his MLB debut since Derek Jeter in 1995. The Yankees icon was 20 years old when he first donned the pinstripes at the Major League level.
Originally drafted by the Yankees 30th overall in 2019, the Watchung, NJ native signed later that June and made his professional debut with the Pulaski Yankees in the Rookie Advanced Appalachian League. Across 275 minor league games, he amassed 50 home runs, and swiped 89 bases while posting a .263/.376/.505 slash line.
Last summer Volpe represented the American league at the All-Star Futures Game. New York will kick off their 2023 campaign at home vs. San Francisco this Thursday.
