Brazilian soccer star Neymar will undergo season ending surgery on his right ankle Paris Saint-Germain announced Monday.
“Neymar Jr. has presented several episodes of instability of the right ankle in recent years,” PSG said in their statement. “Following his last sprain on February 20, the Paris Saint-Germain medical staff recommended a ligament repair operation to avoid a major risk of recurrence. All the experts consulted have confirmed this necessity.”
Neymar, 31, had to be taken off the field on a stretcher in PSG’s 4-3 victory vs. Lille in the French League and hasn’t played since. The forward will undergo surgery in Doha, Qatar in the coming days and is expected to make a full recovery in roughly 4 months time.
With 13 goals and 11 assists across Ligue 1 competition this year, Neymar will be missed as PSG attempts to claw their way back in their Champions League showdown with Bayern Munich. The clubs are set to square off in the second leg of their round of 16 matchup which PSG currently trails 1-0.
The French giant currently sits atop the Ligue 1 standings with a 20-3-3 record across 26 contests, 8pts clear of 2nd place Marseille.
