The Ottawa Redblacks have named Bob Dyce as the 3rd Head Coach in franchise history on Friday.
Dyce, originally from Winnipeg, MB, served as the team’s special teams coordinator since 2016, but took over head coaching duties on an interim basis in 2022. A veteran amongst the CFL coaching ranks, the 56 year old has also had stops in Winnipeg and Saskatchewan as part of his 20 season coaching career.
“I’m tremendously excited for the opportunity presented to me by Shawn Burke, Mark Goudie, Adrian Sciarra, Roger Greenberg, John Ruddy, John Pugh and Bill Shenkman to serve as the Head Coach of the Ottawa REDBLACKS,” said Dyce. “It’s amazing that seven years after first coming to Ottawa, I get to lead this talented group of players in front of such a passionate fan base. I look forward to working together with Shawn and the players to build a strong team that we all will be proud of both on the field and in the community.”
A two time Grey Cup winner with the RedBlacks and Rough Riders, Dyce has a reputation as a players coach who is able to connect with his roster wherever he’s been.
Ottawa wrapped up a miserable 2022 campaign which saw the club go 4-14 on the season, tied with Edmonton for the worst mark in the league. Making matters worse, the team also went 0-9 at home extending their struggles at TD Place where they’ve posted a 2-23 record since 2018.
“We’re excited to bring Coach Dyce back as the third Head Coach in Ottawa REDBLACKS history,” said General Manager Shawn Burke. “Bob is not only an excellent coach but also a great man who personifies leadership. Bob will continue to inspire players to reach new heights as he leads us into a new era of REDBLACKS football in Ottawa.”
The RedBlacks hope a change along the sidelines will help bring back the string of on field successes which saw a Grey Cup victory and another trip to the league championship in a 3 year span not that long ago.
