The San Francisco Giants have hired Pete Putila as their new GM.
Putila will replace Scott Harris who was hired by the Detroit Tigers as their new President of Baseball Operations last month. The 33 year old former Houston front office member had spent the previous 12 years with the Astros organization, with the last 3 seasons in the role of Assistant GM.
“One of the things that really excited us about Pete is the fact that he has an extensive background in player development,” said President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi during a Zoom call with reporters on Monday night. “That doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re limiting the scope to the Minor Leagues. We’ve talked a lot over the last couple of years about how much we value continued player development through and including the Major League level and think players can continue to improve. That’s really been a point of emphasis throughout Pete’s very successful career with the Astros.”
Putila now becomes the 10th General Manager in Giants history during the San Francisco era. The West Virginia grad has worked exclusively in baseball since 2011 after being hired on by the Astros following an internship with the team.
“I’m really excited about the opportunity,” said Putila. “One important part of the interview process was to get to spend time with Farhan and the leadership staff, including [manager Gabe Kapler]. I was just really impressed with the team in terms of their humility and desire to improve in every area. That’s something that excites me. I think it’s what makes going to work every day a lot of fun. Just trying to figure out ways to acquire the best players, develop players and support them. I’m very appreciative of the opportunities that are received with the Astros. I want to thank everyone there. I’m really excited to start this new chapter.”
The Astros for their part were quick to offer congratulations to their former Assistant GM, but later joked that he would have to “buy his own Astros playoff tickets” after the move.
Following a 107 win season in 2021, the Giants struggled this year posting an 81-81 record and ultimately missing out on the postseason altogether.
Putila will now join 2021 MLB Manager of the Year award winner Gabe Kapler in helping to reshape the team’s roster ahead of the 2023 campaign. Impending free agents for San Francisco include 1B Brandon Belt, OF Joc Pederson, SP Carlos Rodon (player option), and a decision regarding 3B Evan Longoria (club option) looming as well.
Financial terms of Putila’s contract were not immediately disclosed.
