According to Adam Schefter, San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance suffered a significant ankle injury against the Seattle Seahawks Sunday, one which will cost him the remainder of the 2022 season.
Lance, 22, was hurt with 2:20 remaining in the 1st quarter after taking a hit from Cody Barton on a rush up the middle. The hit caused the Niners QB to land awkwardly forcing his right leg to bend sharply underneath him.
According to San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan, Lance suffered a broken ankle on the play and will undergo season-ending surgery.
The former 3rd overall draft pick was 2 for 3 for 30 yards through the air and 13 yards on the ground on 3 rushes prior to going down. He was replaced by longtime 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo who would go 13/21 for 154 yards and 1 TD the rest of the way as San Francisco cruised to a 27-7 victory over their NFC West rivals.
Garoppolo, who had previously helped guide the Niners to the NFC Championship and a Super Bowl appearance, agreed to a reworked 1 year deal on August 29th with the team. Under his new contract, he would receive a $6.5M base salary, but with incentives could see it rise up to $16M. As a result of Lance’s injury, it’s very likely that he’ll now reach those playing time based escalators.
The 3 quarters and change of game action were the first for Garoppolo since he underwent offseason surgery on his right shoulder in March.
The 49ers will travel to Denver next weekend to take on the Broncos on Sunday September 25th for a primetime 8:20pm game.
