The Saskatchewan Roughriders have announced that they are releasing American DL Garrett Marino effective immediately.
Marino, 28, had accumulated 9 tackles and 1 sack in 8 games played this season for the CFL franchise.
On July 11th Marino was suspended 4 games for a “dangerous and reckless low hit” on Ottawa RedBlacks QB Jeremiah Masoli. There were also allegations that Marino made insensitive comments about Masoli’s heritage in the aftermath of the hit as well.
The suspension was the longest of its kind in CFL history. No stranger to controversy, the Mission Viejo, CA native drew the ire of fans and his fellow players for perceived “cheap shots” and late hits over the course of his 2 year CFL career.
The 6’2” 290lbs lineman’s latest such incident involved Winnipeg Blue Bombers QB Zach Collaros on a play that drew instant outrage from Bombers players and fans alike.
Earlier this season Marino was also fined for unnecessary roughness in a game against BC Lions in an incident involving OL Peter Godber. Prior to that, the Alabama-Birmingham product was ejected from a game against the Blue Bombers in 2021 for throwing punches.
While other CFL teams will be able to put in claims for the defensive lineman, it wouldn’t appear as though there will be many clubs lining up for his services given his current reputation amongst players and fans alike.
