Canadian golfer Brooke Henderson captured the 2nd major of her young career Sunday at the Evian Resort Golf Club in South Eastern France.
Henderson, 24, sunk an 8 foot birdie putt on 18 to capture the Evian Championship by one stroke over American Sophia Schubert. The Smiths Falls, Ontario native posted a -17 score for the tournament after shooting an even par final round.
A 12 time winner on the LPGA tour, Henderson held a two stroke lead heading into the final round Sunday. However, a double bogey on the 6th hole, which included a 4 putt, very nearly derailed Henderson’s bid for the title. After a subsequent bogey on the 11th hole, she suddenly found herself in a 6 way tie atop the leaderboard.
Luckily, back to back birdies on 14 and 15 put her back into contention, and provided her with the opportunity to win the event outright on the final hole.
Henderson used a strong back 9 to close out the event with an even par 71 and claim the $1M tournament prize.
The leaderboard saw a logjam of golfers in contention down the stretch, with Ko, Kim, Hull, Ciganda, and Saigo all tying for 3rd place at -15. Mao Saigo of Japan rode a hot putter to a -7 final round, vaulting herself into contention after beginning the day 9 strokes behind the Canadian.
The championship is Henderson’s first major since winning the Women’s PGA Championship back in 2016.
