Rúben Amorim expected to stay in Portugal despite PSG rumours
Paris Saint-Germain fans received bad news related to their possible new head coach earlier this morning as Rúben Amorim, Sporting Club Portugal’s coach, is reportedly set to stay at the club for the 2022-2023 season.
The Portuguese media outlet A Bola published an article stating that the club’s head coach does not want to leave Lisbon at the moment and wants to stay at least one more year as Sporting’s head coach before thinking about the next step in his career.
“I have made my decision. I don’t want to leave like this, I’m not leaving now,” Amorim said. “I know I run the risk of being fired, I could go another way, but they’re going to have to take another year with me.”
According to the French newspaper Le Parisien, Amorim was leading the race to become the French club’s new head coach and his signing was considered a top priority in the upcoming weeks.
After a successful career as a player, Amorim decided to become a coach one year after his last season as a footballer. The 37-year-old manager worked at Casa Pia and Braga before joining the Lions in 2020. Since then, Amorim has enjoyed a successful run as Sporting’s head coach winning four trophies, including the 2020-2021 Liga Portugal Bwin.
Rumours linking Amorim and PSG began to swirl earlier this week after Kylian Mbappé signed his new contract. It was said that the club wants to transform its structure, as evidenced by the firing of their sporting director, Leonardo.
Insiders in the French capital also believe that Mauricio Pochettino, PSG’s head coach, might be on the move this summer, which is where the Ligue 1 champions purported interest in Amorim stems from.
As reported by A Bola, Amorim’s contract with the Portuguese club goes until the summer of 2024 and his release clause is roughly €30 million.
