Former UFC Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was arrested for attempted murder on Monday according to the San Jose Police Department. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail where he is being held without bail. His court hearing is currently set for Wednesday.
Police responded to a shooting near the intersection of Monterey Hwy and Bailey Ave. yesterday. One adult male was shot at least once and transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The SJPD later revealed that Velasquez was arrested as the suspect in the shooting:
The 39 year old MMA fighter was a two time former UFC Heavyweight champion before retiring from the sport in 2019. Since hanging up his gloves in the octagon, Velasquez had been making numerous appearances across American and Mexican wrestling promotions in recent years.
Velasquez held a 14-3 career MMA record, and most recently fought in 2019 against Francis Ngannou, a bout he would ultimately lose via first round knockout. The former Div 1 wrestler at Arizona State was widely considered one of the best heavyweight fighters of the past decade.
It’s currently unclear what the motive was for the incident, and neither Velasquez, nor his team have offered any comment since the arrest.
