Shaheen Holloway is headed back to his alma mater. Fresh off guiding Saint Peter’s to their magical Elite Eight run, Holloway is set to be introduced as the next head coach at Seton Hall.
The Peacocks famously knocked off Kentucky, Murray State and Purdue to advance to this year’s Elite Eight, before ultimately bowing out against North Carolina. The run marked the furthest a 15 seed had ever advanced in March Madness.
In four years at Saint Peters, the 45 year old accumulated a 64-54 record, taking home the MAAC Coach of the Year award for 2020. Holloway played college ball at Seton Hall from 1996-2000, where he set school records for career assists and was named to the All-Big East team three times. He was inducted into the Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012.
Following his playing career, Holloway turned to coaching, joining Iona as an assistant under Kevin Willard. The native of Queens, NY worked with Willard for 11 seasons at both Iona and Seton Hall, before accepting the head coaching position at Saint Peters in 2018.
After the 8th seeded Pirates bowed out in the first round to TCU, Willard announced he would be taking the head coaching position at the University of Maryland. Seton Hall didn’t waste any time finding a replacement, announcing Holloway as their next head coach on Wednesday.
In a statement posted to the university website, athletic director Bryan Felt said “I am incredibly excited to welcome Shaheen Holloway and his family home to Seton Hall… Shaheen is a winner in every sense of the word, and he is not only an incredible coach, but also an incredible educator of young men. He works tirelessly to put his student-athletes in a position to succeed, and he makes them believe that they can achieve anything with hard work and determination. That is evidenced by his historic NCAA tournament run this month.”
Holloway takes over a program which went 21-11 this season, while finishing in 5th in the Big East during the regular season. The Pirates have two incoming 4 star freshmen in the 2022 recruiting class in Jaquan Harris, and Jaquan Sanders.
Holloway is expected to be introduced as the Pirates new head coach at a press conference on Thursday.
