The Ottawa Senators announced Sunday they had come to terms with star prospect Jake Sanderson, signing him to a 3 year entry level contract.
The 19 year old wrapped up an injury riddled season with the University of North Dakota that saw him register 26pts (8G, 18A) in 23 games. Originally selected 5th overall in the 2020 NHL entry draft, Sanderson figures to play a prominent role on the Sens blue line for years to come.
“We’re very pleased to get Jake under contract,” said Sens GM Pierre Dorion. “An important cog to our future on defence, Jake is an effortless skater who possesses all the tools to be a complete
NHL defenceman.”
Sanderson has made an impact at every level of hockey he’s played at thus far. His calm demeanour and offensive upside saw him named team captain for the US team at the 2022 World Juniors, and also managed to crack the American Olympic roster as well.
The talented teenager is the son of former NHL player Geoff Sanderson, who spent time with 7 franchises over the course of his 1104 game career. Jake is currently nursing a hand injury sustained in UND’s 2-1 win over Colorado College several weeks back.
Sanderson’s collegiate career came to an end Thursday night as North Dakota fell 2-1 in overtime to Notre Dame in the National College Hockey Conference championship in Albany, NY. The blue liner officially confirmed to school officials his intent to turn pro over the course of the weekend.
Ottawa will now look to have their medical staff evaluate Sanderson’s hand before making a decision regarding next steps for their top prospect. With Sanderson signed to his ELC, attention now turns to his college teammate Tyler Kleven whom the Senators took in the 2nd round (44th overall) of the same draft.
Kleven is viewed as more of a stay at home defender than Sanderson. However he plays a more physical brand of hockey, oftentimes making highlight reels for his thunderous hits on opponents. Kleven posted 10pts (7G, 3A) in 38 games this season for UND.
The Senators are next in action on Tuesday against the Nashville Predators.
