Former All-Pro safety Eric Weddle is unretiring to join the Los Angeles Rams for the playoffs. The announcement was made by Weddle’s agent David Canter on his Twitter account Wednesday morning.
Weddle is familiar with the Rams whom he started all 16 games for in 2019 before retiring at season’s end. The former LA captain fills an immediate need at safety for the team heading into their Wildcard matchup with the Arizona Cardinals.
Los Angeles lost defensive signal caller Jordan Fuller for the year due to an ankle injury in the team’s season finale against the 49ers. Safety Taylor Rapp is currently in the league’s concussion protocol and is questionable for Monday, while CB Darious Williams also suffered a shoulder injury last week.
The Rams depleted secondary will welcome the former 6x Pro Bowler with open arms as they hope to make a postseason run. Weddle recently turned 37 years old, and while his veteran experience will be a huge boost to the Rams defense, it will be interesting to monitor his usage. With only 5 days to get back up to speed with Defensive Coordinator Raheem Morris’ system, Los Angeles may elect to only use Weddle sparingly vs. the Cards.
Weddle posted 108 tackles in 16 games with Los Angeles in 2019. The Rams open up their quest for a Super Bowl berth on January 17th at 8:15pm ET. Los Angeles hopes to become the 2nd team to ever win the SB at their home stadium, joining the 2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
