Evander Kane is headed to Edmonton. The troubled winger has reportedly come to terms with the Oilers on a deal for the remainder of the season, and will join the team immediately.
The 30 year old will be paid close to $1M for the remainder of the season, though in terms of cap hit, this figure will come in closer to $2M as it would be prorated for a full year.
In an earlier announcement, the NHL posted a public statement to their website indicating that Kane would not face any suspension for his alleged breach of COVID protocols earlier this year:
“The National Hockey League announced today that it has concluded its investigation into the circumstances pursuant to which Evander Kane travelled cross-border during the Holiday Period. – The National Hockey League announced today that it has concluded its investigation into the circumstances pursuant to which Evander Kane travelled cross-border during the Holiday Period.
The report prepared in connection with the investigation, which was conducted by Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP, concluded that there was insufficient evidence to “conclusively find that Mr. Kane knowingly made misrepresentations regarding his COVID-19 status or test results in connection with his international travel.”
As a result, the League has determined not to pursue any additional League-imposed discipline against Kane at the current time.”
The former Shark previously posted 49pts (22G, 27A) in 56 games with San Jose last year, however had yet to suit up in 2021-22 due to suspension and a conditioning stint in the AHL. Kane will now join an Oilers team which came roaring out the gates, but has gone through a miserable stretch of late, causing them to slide down to 6th in the Pacific division.
The Canadian winger has suited up for 12 NHL seasons thus far, but has had more than his fair share of off ice controversy. While the Oilers were quick to jump on the opportunity to add a productive scoring threat to their roster, many expect this to be Kane’s final chance at the NHL level.
Included in his newest deal with Edmonton is a full no movement clause.
