AL/NL Rookies of the Year

Many became familiar with the name Randy Arozarena last year during the Tampa Bay Rays’ run to the World Series. Last season’s breakout star of the playoffs was officially crowned AL Rookie of the Year today, edging out Wander Franco and Luis Garcia for the honour.

Arozarena hit 20HRs and stole 20 bases while leading all rookies with a 4.1 WAR in 2021. The former ALCS MVP becomes Tampa Bay’s first rookie of the year since Wil Myers earned that distinction back in 2013.

Not to be outdone, Reds second baseman Jonathan India was named the NL Rookie of the Year in a separate announcement Monday. India led all rookies in walks, hit by pitches, and ranked 5th in onbase percentage amongst all NL players in 2021. The onbase machine also hit 21HRs and scored 98 runs while also batting leadoff for Cincinnati at various points throughout the year.

India was the clear choice for the award, beating out Cardinals outfielder Dylan Carlson and Marlins pitcher Trevor Rogers when the ballots were tallied. The 24 year old is the 8th member of the Reds organization to win the ROY award all time.

Still to be announced later this week are the AL/NL Cy Young awards, as well as the AL/NL MVPs.
