Following their 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano Wednesday, Barcelona has fired Ronald Koeman. The loss marks the club’s third defeat in their last 4 outings, including a one sided loss to Real Madrid in El Clasico this weekend.
FC Barcelona issued the following statement on their team website earlier today “FC Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first team coach. The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva. FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the Club and wishes him all the best in his professional career.”
Sources indicate that an interim coach will likely take over while the club begins its search for a permanent hire. Former midfielder Xavi Hernandez is reportedly high on the clubs list of potential replacements for Koeman. The 41 year old Spaniard made over 500 appearances in a Barcelona uniform, and is currently managing Al Sadd in the Qatar Stars League.
Barca currently finds themselves in 9th place in La Liga, well behind table leading Real Madrid. The club is back in action this weekend against Alaves on Saturday.
