12 years after he initially left the club, international soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is headed back to Old Trafford. Manchester United announced the stunning deal on their social media accounts on Friday afternoon:
The 36 year old forward has reportedly signed a 2 year deal with United. The club’s communications department issued the following statement “Manchester United is delighted to confirm that the club has reached agreement with Juventus for the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo, subject to agreement of personal terms, visa and medical.”
Ronaldo is a 5 time Ballon D’Or winner with over 30 major trophies on his resume. It was widely reported that Ronaldo would be testing the waters with several other top European clubs this summer after 3 years in Italy with Juventus. Manchester City was among the purported suitors who had expressed interest in the Portuguese icon.
Reports indicate that United became involved in negotiations late Thursday night, with a deal coming together Friday morning. A 5 time Champions League winner, Ronaldo rejoins United and Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær for the 2021-22 Premier League season. United has one win and one draw thus far.
