The Boston Red Sox officially removed the “interim” tag from manager Chad Tracy’s job description, signing the bench boss to a 3 year deal that will run through 2029 season on Tuesday.
Tracy officially becomes the 49th manager in team history and gets the job security he was seeking after helping to orchestrate a remarkable second half turn around for the Red Sox. Boston will also hold a team option for 2030 as part of the deal.
The Red Sox officially clinched a wildcard spot on Sunday after posting a 74-55 record during Tracy’s tenure. The 41 year old was named interim manager back in April following the release of long time skipper Alex Cora who was let go following a 10-17 start to the season.
In addition to extending Tracy, the club also announced on Tuesday that they had exercised their team options on chief baseball officer Craig Breslow’s deal as well. That will keep the front office executive under team control through the 2030 MLB campaign and lines up with Tracy’s deal as well.
“Craig and Chad are two exceptionally talented leaders who have earned these opportunities in very different ways,” said Red Sox President & CEO Sam Kennedy. “Over the last three years, we have watched Craig bring clarity, discipline, and conviction to the work of building our baseball operation. Chad was asked to step into a difficult situation with little notice, but the trust he immediately commanded at the major league level was earned through years of work across our organization. What this team has accomplished over the past several months has been historic. Results matter greatly in this business, but so do judgment, character, and the ability to bring out the best in others. Craig and Chad have demonstrated all of those qualities, and they have earned our confidence in leading us forward.”
From July 3rd through August 7th, Boston posted the best 30-game span in franchise history, going a blistering 27-3 during that time. The team tied a franchise record for most consecutive wins with 15 straight victories between July 3rd and 22nd. Prior to taking on the top role in Boston, Tracy managed the club’s Triple-A affiliate in Worcester from 2022 to this year.
Barring an unthinkable collapse by Tampa Bay over the final few games of the season, Boston is now on a collision course to face the New York Yankees in the Wild Card round when play kicks off in a few weeks. Until then, the Red Sox will close out their season with a 3 game set vs. the Guardians, followed by a homestand against the Cubs.
