The Detroit Red Wings have announced that former player turned executive Shawn Horcoff has been appointed as the club’s new General Manager. Prior to taking on the role, Horcoff was an assistant GM with the team, while also serving as the General Manager for the club’s AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids.
“As our process continues to find the best possible leader for Red Wings hockey operations, I’m appreciative of Shawn for stepping up to serve in this capacity,” said CEO Chris Ilitch. “His knowledge of our organization and range of experience allows us to operate with a clear decision-maker in place for the season ahead, while maintaining our commitment to carry out a thorough, methodical search process on our own timeline. Shawn has my complete support, and the authority to make decisions in the best interests of our organization.”

Former GM Steve Yzerman will transition into a new role as Senior Advisor to the Governor and CEO. The hall of fame forward was tabbed to be moved into a different role with the organization following a disappointing 2025-26 NHL season which saw the team fall from atop the Atlantic division to outside the playoff picture altogether.
“A thorough evaluation of our hockey operations following this past season’s disappointing finish led to discussions with Steve Yzerman and a determination that a change was necessary,” the club said in a statement. “This decision was driven by our need for a new vision in hockey leadership while preserving organizational continuity through the offseason and stands independent of other matters. We’re grateful for Steve’s invaluable contributions and his transition to senior advisor.”
While the title may be new for Horcoff, his long standing relationship with the organization should help stabilize a franchise that’s had a turbulent offseason. One of the main tasks that the 47 year old will be charged with is getting former captain Dylan Larkin on the same page as the front office heading into the season.
The American born forward went public with a trade request this summer, but the club has stood its ground in terms of flipping him to a new team to date. Rumours have been swirling about a possible deal with Minnesota, a different one with Montreal, and even a multi-team blockbuster which were all making the rounds of the hockey blogosphere over the last week.
With Horcoff now in place, and training camp kicking off in less than a week, the Red Wings will have to make some significant roster decisions in a short amount of time. Detroit is slated to kick off their preseason schedule on Monday September 21st against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
