Following his team’s 27-7 Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Rams star defensive end Myles Garrett told reporters that his knee wasn’t 100% healthy. It would appear as though both Garrett and the team are now looking to nip that issue in the bud by having the 30 year undergo arthroscopic surgery on his knee in the coming days.
The procedure will mean that Garrett will be placed on the injured reserve, sidelining him for at least the next 4 games. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year will be first eligible to return to action for his team’s Week 6 contest against the Arizona Cardinals.
Garrett was sidelined for most of training camp with swelling in his injured knee. While the Rams have been tightlipped about the exact nature of his injury, many have assumed it is his left knee based on the fact that the pass rusher has been wearing a sleeve over that leg during practices for the last several weeks.
It will be a rare absence for the edge rusher who has been the poster child for durability throughout his career given the physical nature of his position. Over the previous 5 seasons, Garrett has suited up for 83 out of a possible 85 games. With the single season sack king on the sidelines, Byron Young will be asked to shoulder a bigger load along the defensive line. Meanwhile, Josaiah Stewart and Desjuan Johnson are also likely to see an increase in snaps for the time being as well.
Los Angeles acquired Garrett this offseason, sending pass rusher Jared Verse and three draft picks, including a first-round selection in 2027 to the Cleveland Browns. The former Brown was limited to just 39 snaps on defence and held without a tackle against the 49ers for just the 4th time in his NFL career.
