The San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Deebo Samuel are reuniting via a 1 year, deal which could be worth up to $7M if all incentives are reached.
Samuel last played for the 49ers during the 2024 season when he caught 51 passes for 670 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also added another 136 yards on the ground on 42 rushing attempts.
The reunion comes after San Francisco received some troubling news regarding their pass catching group this week. WR Ricky Pearsall is dealing with swelling in the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which could require surgery. Then veteran wideout Christian Kirk went down with a strained calf causing him to miss several practices this week.
As a result, San Francisco’s front office opted to bring in a familiar face who is already comfortable in coach Kyle Shanahan’s offence to add some much needed depth to the team’s wide receiver room.
Since being drafted 36th overall back in 2019 out of South Carolina, Samuel has amassed 5,519 yards through the air, to go along with another 1,218 yards on the ground. His 48 career receiving and rushing touchdowns make him a versatile weapon in San Francisco’s system, though the 30 year old had previously bristled at being used as a running back in the past.
After a one year stint in Washington with the Commanders, Samuel may be more open to resuming his “Swiss Army knife” role on the west coast after receiving lukewarm interest in his services as a free agent this summer.
San Francisco will play preseason games against the Titans, Chargers, and Raiders, before kicking off their regular season with a September 10th showdown against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
