Spain put on a clinical performance to defeat a sloppy French side 2-0 in Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup semifinal. With the win, the Spaniards secured a place in Sunday’s championship match, moving one step closer to lifting football’s biggest prize for the second time in the nation’s history.

France entered the semifinal with one of the tournament’s strongest defensive groups, but Spain dictated the tempo for much of the contest in Arlington, Texas. With a blend of technical quality, disciplined defending and offensive creativity they proved too much for Didier Deschamps’ team to overcome.

Spain opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after teenage sensation Lamine Yamal was fouled inside the penalty area by Lucas Digne. Veteran forward Mikel Oyarzabal calmly converted the resulting penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to give La Roja a deserved 1-0 advantage.

The European champions continued to control possession throughout the first half, limiting the chances for France’s dangerous trio led by Kylian Mbappé. Spain’s unwavering defensive structure prevented France from creating any kind of sustained pressure, while Yamal and Dani Olmo repeatedly threatened on the counterattack. Yamal would eventually have a goal disallowed for offside before halftime, setting the tone for what was to come in the second half.

France would try to raise the tempo after the break but struggled to find space. The decisive second goal arrived in the 58th minute when Pedro Porro finished an excellent pass after combining with Dani Olmo. The full-back’s composed finish doubled Spain’s lead, and put the 2022 World Cup runners-up firmly on the brink of elimination.

Despite mixing in more offensively minded substitutions, France couldn’t find a breakthrough. Mbappé was largely kept quiet throughout the match, while Spain’s back line produced another outstanding display. France managed little in the final third, with Spain comfortably seeing out the closing stages to preserve another clean sheet.

The victory adds to Spain’s remarkable run of form under manager Luis de la Fuente. Yamal, still only 19 years old, once again demonstrated why he’s regarded as one of world football’s brightest young stars, and will now get to showcase his talents on arguably the biggest stage in all of soccer.

For France, the defeat ends hopes of reaching a third consecutive FIFA World Cup final. After impressive victories throughout the knockout rounds, Les Bleus were unable to match Spain’s intensity, and precision and will now be left to wonder what could have been.

Spain now advance to the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final, where they’ll face the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between England and Argentina. Sunday’s final will be Spain’s opportunity to capture its first World Cup title since its historic triumph in South Africa in 2010.
