Lightning Sign J.J. Moser To 8 Year Extension

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed defenceman J.J. Moser to an 8 year, $54M contract extension the club announced on Saturday.

The deal, which will carry an average annual value of $6.75M per season, is the latest long term deal handed out by Lightning management in recent years. Moser is now the 10th player to be under contract for at least the next 3 seasons, joining the likes of Victor Hedman, Ryan McDonagh, Anthony Cirelli, and Jake Guentzel amongst others.

The 25 year old blue liner currently leads the Lightning in ice-time, averaging 21:41 per contest. Moser has appeared in 34 contests with Tampa Bay this season, accumulating 12 points (3G, 9A) along the way. The 6’2″ defender isn’t known for his offensive prowess, netting a career high 31 points across 82 games played back in 2022-23, but is a steadying presence on the back end, and is a +24 on the season to date.

Moser was acquired back in 2024 from the Utah Mammoth, alongside Conor Geekie, a 2024 7th round pick, and a 2025 second round pick in exchange for Mikhail Sergachev. Originally drafted 60th overall in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft by the Arizona Coyotes, Moser currently leads all Tampa Bay defensemen in takeaways (14), and blocked shots (43).

The new deal will officially kick in during the 2026-27 season, and run through the 2033-34 NHL campaign. Moser is expected to join team Switzerland for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Italy.
