Scottie Scheffler Arrested At PGA Championship

Talk about a rough commute to work. World number 1 golfer, Scottie Scheffler, was booked into a Louisville county jail on Friday morning after being detained by police near the entrance of the Valhalla Golf Club, which is playing host to the 2024 PGA Championship.

Shortly before 7:30am, Scheffler was arrested and booked after being charged with second degree assault of a police office, criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic.

The situation was recounted by a witness below:

“He was going into Valhalla to work out and get ready for his tee time,” Louisville attorney Steve Romines said. “(Police) were directing traffic, he held his media credential out and was going in like they’ve been instructed to. Apparently there had been a traffic accident, or maybe even a fatality down the road, and that had changed the traffic patterns, and he was unaware of that. And, I think the officer that was directing traffic, was maybe not part of the event traffic detail and so that’s where the communication, miscommunication arose and that’s why we’re here.”

The 27 year old was ultimately released from custody later that morning, and arrived at Valhalla just after 9am. Scheffler was scheduled to tee off at 10:08am, however the arrest, and a vehicular incident involving a pedestrian nearby have caused delays to the start of the 2nd round of the tournament.

Through 1 round in Kentucky, Xander Schauffele currently leads all golfers after turning in a 9 under par opening round. Chasing him are Sahith Theegala, Tony Finau, and Mark Hubbard (all -6), followed by 6 golfers tied for 5th at 5 under par, including Rory McIlroy.

Scheffler carded an opening round -4 to sit tied for 11th heading into Friday’s action.
